Lipoedema

Lipoedema stages and types

Stage describes how far the tissue has changed; type describes where the fat sits. Together they decide how we plan sessions, which compression class you need and whether the knee needs treatment.

Progression

Four stages

Stage 1

Skin smooth, subcutaneous tissue thickened and tender.

Stage 2

Uneven surface; nodules the size of a walnut can be felt.

Stage 3

Large overhanging folds of tissue; walking is affected.

Stage 4

Lymphatics overwhelmed — lipo-lymphoedema.

Distribution

Five types

Type I

Hips and buttocks only.

Type II

Buttocks to the knees, with pads on the inner knee.

Type III

Hip to ankle — the most common “trouser” pattern.

Type IV

Arms involved as well.

Type V

Below the knee only — rare.
