Professor of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Sculptor. Author of Iconoplasty — the book this clinic is named after.
Biography →What a sculptor sees when he looks at a leg — and why it matters for planning surgery.
A leg is read by the eye as a single line from hip to floor. The eye forgives a thick thigh if the ankle tapers; it forgives a full calf if the knee is defined. What it does not forgive is a line that breaks — a knee that swings inward, a calf that starts too low, an ankle with no narrowing.
Sculptors have known this for three thousand years. The classical canon sets the knee at roughly the midpoint of the leg, the widest point of the calf in its upper third, and the ankle at about two-thirds of the calf’s width. Prof. Karacalar plans against these relationships rather than against a single measurement, which is why treating one area often means small adjustments in two others.
This is also why the clinic is called Ikonoplasti — from his book Iconoplasty, on what sculpture can teach aesthetic surgery. The tools are surgical; the eye is a sculptor’s.
Where the knee sits along the leg decides whether it reads long or short.
The widest point should sit high; a low calf shortens the leg visually.
The narrowing above the foot is what makes a leg look light in motion.
