Lipoedema

Living with lipoedema

Three habits protect your legs — before surgery and after it. None of them is about calorie counting.

Compression

Flat-knit, class 3 garments, put on in the morning before swelling develops. They control fluid and pain; they do not remove tissue.

Eating

Anti-inflammatory rather than calorie-counting: limit refined sugar, be cautious with phytoestrogens and gluten before menopause, and eat enough protein to protect muscle.

Movement

Swimming, cycling and water-based exercise. Avoid impact that loads the knees. Heat — saunas, hot baths — increases swelling, so keep it cool.

After surgery

How the three habits protect your result

The fat cells removed by surgery do not grow back. What remains can still enlarge with major hormonal change or weight gain. Compression in the first weeks shapes the result; the way you eat and move afterwards keeps it. We write all of this into your plan, and your coordinator checks in on it.

Flat-knit, made to measure, class 3. We specify it in your plan and advise on UK suppliers.

No. The aim is less inflammation, not fewer calories. Most patients find the changes manageable.

Low-impact is better for the knees. Many patients return to walking, cycling and swimming with pleasure; running is discussed case by case.
